Progressive Democrats of Montgomery County Endorse Raskin
Group Praises Raskin's Involvement with Progressive Issues Ranging from Civil Rights to Education and Health Care in Maryland
With a membership of over 2,000 in the area, the Montgomery County chapter of the Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), announced its endorsement of Jamie Raskin for Maryland State Senate. PDA, a national grassroots Democratic organization, fights for progressive policies at the local, state, and national level and has a diverse and impressive board with progressive luminaries ranging from members of Congress to veterans of some of the nation's most important social justice movements. PDA National Board Vice Chairperson Stephen Shaff praised Jamie's exemplary qualifications, including a strong record of leadership and accomplishment on issues including civil and equal rights, health care, education, peace, verifiable voting, and making life better for the people of Maryland.
The group noted that Raskin's opponent alarmed her constituents by sponsoring a MD resolution in support of the Iraq War. In contrast, PDA's Maryland Coordinator, Mike Hersh, praised Raskin's participation in all aspects of progressive politics from "street heat" to providing expert testimony in Annapolis where he recently faced down Republican Senator Nancy Jacobs who said, "Mr. Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that?" Raskin answered, "Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible."
Hersh said, "We believe Jamie will make a fine Senator for people of the 20th Legislative District."
